The Germans were the first to strike, landing in Narvik and taking over the port and neighbouring areas, facing a small resistance from the Norwegians.
The largest battle took place near Narvik, when French, Polish, British and Norwegian troops attacked the positions of German mountain infantry, supported by paratroopers and sailors.
The Allies' success was not complete, however.
They failed to destroy the encircled Germans completely, so defenders held out until relief arrived.
