Position Magnifique: Mars-la-Tour 1870 is the game included in Paper Wars Issue #81, published by Compass Games. This brigade-scale operational wargame recreates the pivotal Battle of Mars-la-Tour fought on August 16th, 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War.
The French player commands Marshal Bazaine’s Army of the Rhine and must exploit numerical superiority and the deadly Chassepot rifle to destroy isolated Prussian forces. The Prussian player, under von Moltke, relies on timing, bluff, Krupp artillery and rapid reinforcements to avoid collapse and seize victory.
The game uses a dynamic chit-pull activation system designed to simulate battlefield confusion, command friction and fog of war. Although intended for two players, it is considered very solitaire-friendly.
Designed by Hermann Luttmann, the game combines historical accuracy with approachable mechanics and strong operational tension. Members of the hex-and-counter community often describe it as an excellent introduction to the “Blind Swords” family of systems.

Unlike many large-format Franco-Prussian War simulations, Position Magnifique focuses on accessibility and narrative tension without sacrificing historical flavor. The asymmetrical gameplay creates difficult operational decisions for both sides, making every activation meaningful.
Its compact format, moderate playtime and elegant command system make it particularly appealing for players interested in nineteenth-century warfare or magazine-format wargames.
