Fighting Formations: Grossdeutschland Division's Battle for Kharkov is an expansion for GMT Games' tactical WWII series Fighting Formations. Designed by Bryan R. VanNortwick and developed by Chad Jensen, it focuses on the actions of the elite German Grossdeutschland Division during the battles around Kharkov and Belgorod in 1943, as well as selected engagements in early 1944. Ownership of the base game Fighting Formations: Grossdeutschland Infantry Division is required.

Historical Background

Following the German defeat at Stalingrad, Soviet forces launched major offensives aimed at collapsing the southern sector of the Eastern Front. During Operation Star, Soviet armies captured Belgorod and Kharkov. In response, Field Marshal Manstein organized the famous counterstroke known as the "Backhand Blow," culminating in the recapture of Kharkov in March 1943. The Grossdeutschland Division played a key role in these defensive and offensive operations.

Game Description

This expansion adds ten new scenarios, updated orders of battle, new maps, and additional units for both sides. Many scenarios feature smaller and faster engagements than those found in the original game, making them particularly suitable for players seeking a more compact tactical experience while retaining the depth of the Fighting Formations system.
