Warriors of America is a strategic wargame for two players covering the American War of Independence. Designed by Adam Starkweather and published by Compass Games, the game is inspired by the acclaimed Warriors of God system and offers an accessible, streamlined approach to one of the most important conflicts of the eighteenth century.
Players command either the American revolutionary forces or the British Crown. Military operations are only one part of the struggle, however. Recruitment, international alliances, historical events and the ability to maintain the morale of one's side are equally important.
The map focuses on the major colonized regions along the eastern seaboard while extending westward toward Indiana and north into Canada.
Major events can shape each season, while both sides attempt to call upon foreign allies.
The American cause may receive assistance from European powers hostile to Great Britain, including:
Meanwhile, the British player commands one of the most powerful armies in the world and can call upon Hessian mercenaries to reinforce the Crown's war effort.
The American player must raise money and build an army capable of resisting a better-trained and more experienced British force. The British player, on the other hand, must attempt to crush the rebellion before it grows into an international conflict.
Warriors of America focuses on the strategic and dynamic aspects of the conflict.
The game uses a point-to-point map and an abstract system designed to portray the major political and military decisions of the war without overwhelming players with excessive detail.
Units include important leaders, land forces and fleets involved in the conflict. Each infantry strength point represents approximately 1,000 men, while turns are played on a monthly scale.
This approach allows players to cover the broader course of the American Revolution within a reasonable playing time while retaining the conflict's essential strategic challenges: territorial control, resource mobilisation, foreign intervention and pressure on the enemy.
With its low complexity level, Warriors of America can also serve as an excellent entry point into eighteenth-century historical wargaming and the American Revolution.
Warriors of America offers an accessible and focused interpretation of the American Revolution. Rather than attempting to simulate every tactical detail, the game concentrates on the major strategic decisions that shaped the conflict: resisting British military power, raising armies, securing foreign assistance and transforming a colonial rebellion into a successful revolution.
An excellent choice for players looking for a complete historical wargame that can still be played in a single session.
