Guadalcanal: The Battle for Henderson Field, Oct 23–26 1942 is the fifth volume in Dan Verssen Games' Valiant Defense series. This solitaire wargame places you in command of the American forces defending Guadalcanal during the decisive four-day battle of October 23–26, 1942.

You command elements of the 1st Marine Division, supported by soldiers of the 164th Infantry Regiment, Marine artillery, defensive units and the famous Cactus Air Force, as Japanese forces launch repeated attacks against the American perimeter surrounding Henderson Field.

As in other Valiant Defense games, the Japanese opponent is controlled through cards that determine enemy actions. Japanese units advance along dedicated Attack Tracks, forcing the player to constantly adapt his defensive plan while managing limited resources and making critical operational decisions.

An expanded Valiant Defense system

The game retains the core concepts of the Valiant Defense series: a fixed defensive position, enemy forces advancing along attack tracks and a card-driven system controlling the opposing forces.

However, Guadalcanal adds a significant operational layer. The player must not only defend the perimeter but also manage communications, supplies, artillery and air operations.

The Cactus Air Force plays a particularly important role. F4F Wildcats, SBD bombers and SBD patrol aircraft have different functions and can be used to intercept Japanese aircraft and carry out missions that are vital to the overall defense of Henderson Field.

Henderson Field is the key

Protecting Henderson Field is the player's primary concern.

The game can immediately end in defeat if Japanese forces breach the American defensive line, the 1st Marine Division HQ at Henderson Field is lost, or the player has no forces remaining on the board.

Victory Points are earned by destroying Japanese attackers and completing critical missions. The final score determines the player's medal level, providing a way to track performance and improve over successive games.

Historical and hypothetical events

Event Cards introduce another major element of uncertainty. These cards represent historical events as well as plausible alternative situations and can significantly alter the circumstances of a game.

Different difficulty levels and optional variants provide additional challenges and replayability.

Primarily a solitaire wargame

Guadalcanal is first and foremost a solitaire game, following the central philosophy of the Valiant Defense series.

The game also supports 2- and 3-player variants. In competitive play, a second player can take control of the Japanese forces with considerably more decision-making power than the standard automated system. In the three-player variant, two players share command of the American defense while a third player controls the Japanese attackers.
