Yaah! Magazine 1

Yaah! Magazine #1 is the first issue of the magazine published by Flying Pig Games, launched in 2015. Yaah! was conceived as an independent publication devoted to war and strategy games, covering titles from a wide range of publishers rather than focusing exclusively on Flying Pig Games products. The inaugural issue combines articles, scenarios and two complete wargames covering the battles of Stamford Bridge and Hastings in 1066.

The Yaah! concept focuses on relatively compact games designed to fit on an 11" × 17" map, with a single counter sheet and a limited rules booklet, allowing the games to be played in a single sitting. Each issue also provides scenarios for other games.

THE GAMES

Stamford Bridge

This game recreates the Battle of Stamford Bridge, fought on September 25, 1066, when King Harold Godwinson's Anglo-Saxon army defeated the Viking forces led by Harald Hardrada and his allies.

The game uses the Shields & Swords system, with a hex-and-counter approach to medieval battlefield combat. The Stamford Bridge rules combine the core system rules with specific rules for the battle.

A Hill Near Hastings

The second game uses the same system to recreate the Battle of Hastings, fought on October 14, 1066, between Harold's Anglo-Saxon army and the Norman forces commanded by William the Conqueror.

Both games are designed as compact historical wargames and provide relatively short-playing experiences.

EDITORIAL CONTENT

The magazine includes:

• Articles covering a variety of war and strategy games.
• Features on games such as Dungeons & Dragons Attack Wing, Commands & Colors: Napoleonics, Campaign Commander: Roads to Stalingrad, Rivet Wars and the States of Siege series.
