Ardennes ’44 – 4th Edition is an operational-level wargame designed by Mark Simonitch and published by GMT Games. It recreates the German Ardennes Offensive of December 1944, commonly known as the Battle of the Bulge.
On December 16, 1944, under heavy fog, rain, and snow that grounded Allied air power, three German armies launched 26 divisions against thinly held American lines in the Ardennes forests of Belgium and Luxembourg. The strategic goal was to break through to the Meuse River and advance toward Antwerp, splitting Allied forces and disrupting their vital supply port.
The game covers operations from December 16 to December 26, 1944, highlighting key engagements around locations such as Bastogne, St. Vith, and Elsenborn Ridge. The American player must delay and disrupt the German advance by defending critical road junctions, while the German player attempts to push toward the Meuse and potentially change history.
The design emphasizes operational maneuver, road networks, and coordinated attacks, with German offensives following historical advance routes and Allied defenses forming realistic defensive perimeters around important towns.
The 4th Edition introduces upgrades and improvements compared to previous editions while maintaining the streamlined and historically grounded Simonitch system.
