Para Bellum XVII is the seventeenth issue of the Italian historical wargaming magazine. As with every issue of the publication, it includes a complete game with dedicated playing material and die-cut counters.

The featured game, Dervisci, is a battalion-level simulation of two colonial battles fought by the Italian Army near Kassala, in eastern Sudan, against the forces of the Mahdi.

During the late nineteenth century, Italian colonial expansion in East Africa brought the Italian Army into conflict with Dervish forces associated with the Mahdist movement. These little-known engagements represent a fascinating and rarely explored chapter of Italian colonial military history.

The Game

Dervisci recreates two battles at battalion level. Players manoeuvre infantry and cavalry formations across the battlefield, where deployment, mobility and the effective use of artillery can prove decisive.

The game's scale offers a detailed representation of the battlefield while maintaining an accessible operational approach:

  • 900 metres per hex
  • Infantry and cavalry units represented at battalion level
  • Artillery represented at battery level

The game explores a theatre of war rarely covered by historical wargames, placing a European colonial army against the fighting forces of the Mahdist movement.
