Thirty Years of Misery takes players into the heart of the Thirty Years' War, one of the longest and most devastating conflicts in European history.
From 1618 to 1648, the Holy Roman Empire became the stage for a complex struggle involving religion, dynastic ambitions, political rivalry and the intervention of the major European powers.
Rather than recreating individual battles, the game presents a strategic view of the entire conflict. Players must combine military operations, religious influence, political objectives, diplomacy and coalition warfare to reshape the balance of power within the Holy Roman Empire.
Four major factions take part in the struggle: the Imperial Habsburgs, the Catholic League, Sweden and France. Two players can form a coalition against two opposing players, but victory remains individual: even within a victorious alliance, only one faction can ultimately achieve its objectives and win the game.
Victory is not simply about winning battles.
Players must:
The game separates military control from religious influence, allowing the political and confessional dimensions of the Thirty Years' War to play an important role alongside military operations.
Each faction has its own objectives and strategic capabilities.
Imperial Habsburgs
Defend Imperial authority, protect Austria and Bohemia, and expand Habsburg influence throughout the Empire.
Catholic League
Work toward Catholic dominance and support the Imperial cause while pursuing your own faction objectives.
Sweden
Following the Swedish intervention, use the military power of Sweden to alter the balance of the conflict and advance Protestant interests.
France
Exploit the weakening of the Habsburg position and intervene in the conflict to expand French influence in Central Europe.
The game uses cards to trigger historical events and carry out movement and other actions.
Turn order is randomized, forcing players to continually adapt their plans. An operation carefully prepared in advance can suddenly be disrupted by the actions of an opponent—or even an ally.
The Treaty of Westphalia cards also play a special role in determining the end of the game. Once enough of these cards have been placed in their designated locations, they can trigger a sudden end to the game.
Combat is resolved using custom dice. Faction differences are therefore not simply represented by printed unit statistics: they are reflected through faction-specific dice and the effects of events and cards.
This gives each faction a distinct combat identity while preserving the uncertainty and unpredictability of warfare during the Thirty Years' War.
